Team members from youth crime prevention programme, EPIC (Encouraging Potential, Inspiring Change) have been awarded after joining forces with a top sports star to successfully deliver a motivational programme to young people in Stainforth.
Chris Lambert and EPIC’s Team Around the Street team were involved in the Sky Sports programme, delivered in collaboration with the Youth Sport Trust and alongside South Yorkshire Police’s Operation Anticipate – which involved them working with one of Sky Sports Mentors, rugby league player Paul Broadbent.
More than 25 young people got the chance to take part in Key to Success workshops, designed to inspire and motivate young people, explore ways of modifying behaviour, improve life skills and increase attainment – all through participation in sport.
They also joined in motivational sports masterclasses delivered by prop forward Paul, whose rugby career has spanned 17 years, during which time he has represented England and Great Britain and played over 450 first grade games for teams including Sheffield Eagles, Halifax, Hull and Wakefield.
The EPIC programme and its Team Around the Street scheme are delivered as part of the Doncaster Children’s Services Trust 18+ service. Team leader Kev Lynch said: “Paul shared his own life experiences to motivate the young people; explaining that he had to work hard to get to where he is.
“Academically challenged, Paul found sport to be the one school subject he enjoyed. He wasn’t as naturally gifted as some of his teammates and he had to train hard to improve but his passion and commitment to the game shone through.”
It was Paul’s work ethic, desire and commitment to making the best of himself that helped him reach his goal – a huge achievement for someone who describes himself as a player with limited skill and ability.
Commenting on working with the young people in Stainforth, Paul said: “I hope that I demonstrated to the students that they don’t have to be naturally gifted in sport or anything else they enjoy to succeed in it. Passion, determination, self-belief and commitment can outshine any talent.”
