Tania - Team Manager Assessment and Child Protection East Team

“I feel like I’m part of a big family working for the Trust,” says Tania, a team manager at the Assessment and Child Protection Service in the East Team.

“We all understand the Trust values – Be Respectful, Be Excellent and Make a Difference – and we all keep those in mind when we work with children, young people and families.”

Tania has worked for the Trust for over 5 years and been at the Vermuyden Centre in Thorne since 2016. Tania has nine Social Workers and an Advanced Practitioner in her team and says it is ‘brilliant’ working at Thorne.

“It’s an airy, modern, open-plan office and in the same building we have Health Visitors, the Stronger Families and Safer Communities Team, Adult Services, Children in Care, as well as the Parenting and Family Support Services.

“If we need to get a plan around a family, the partner agencies we work with are right here.” This all helps with partnership working and making sure that the children and their families receive the support they need. We use the ‘Signs of safety’ framework, which is a strengths-based approach led by the family and really seems to work and make a difference.

"Every worker keeps the child at the centre of everything they do – we do this through play or by using tools such as 3 houses, wizards and fairies, words and pictures; whereas with teenagers we might go out and do an activity, have a chat or go for a coffee. The child’s voice is heard right through everything including case discussions, case notes, assessment and reports and I’m very proud of the way we do that here at Thorne.”

Tania says the team is “lovely”, with a real team spirit, which is helped by regular team meetings, ‘fish and chip’ Friday and sometimes going out for team tea.

The work is varied; everything from assessment, to case holding children who are supported and reviewed within child in need, child protection or Looked After children processes. The Team also has court work - both private and public law. There is never a dull moment.

Tania said there are lots of opportunities for training and development. For example, Tania has just completed the Post Graduate Certificate in Social Work Management and is very proud of what she has achieved.

In summary, Tania said she couldn’t think of a better place to work “We truly work as a team, where we respect and value each other’s skills and strengths. I enjoy working for the Trust and love being in Thorne. I couldn’t see myself working anywhere else”.
