The Youth Offending Service (YOS), which sits within Targeted Youth Support, is a multi-agency partnership service with five statutory partners (police, probation, health, Youth Justice Board and DMBC).
As well as staff from the statutory partners (police officers, probation officers, social worker, CAMHS worker and substance misuse worker), we also have youth justice staff, Education, Careers Advisors, Family Therapists, Victim Liaison worker and Reparation/Unpaid Hours worker from REMEDI, Groupwork facilitators and we have recently added a Trainee Forensic Psychologist and a Speech and Language Therapist too. This enables us to take an overview of offending among children and young people and to respond quickly and thereby reduce the risk of further offending, further harm to others and of course, further harm to the young person.
We take a child first, offender second approach and offers a whole range of therapeutic and forensic interventions.
We are accountable to the Youth Justice Board and we are inspected by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons and Probation. We are also measured on our reduction in reoffending rates and on how many young people are diverted from custody. Two years ago local re-offending rates for young people in Doncaster were among the worst in the country, now we are proud to say that they among some of the best. Figures recently released show that Doncaster has the 4th lowest rate, at 28.1%, compared to an England average of 37.7%. Reoffending is tracked for two years so this means that the young people with whom we were working in 2015 have mostly not committed any further offences.
