Forever families sought as part of National Adoption Week

Doncaster Children’s Services Trust Adoption team will host an online information event this month as part of National Adoption Week.

The national week runs from Monday 12 to Sunday 18 October and aims to promote a wider understanding of adoption and encourage adopters to come forward for children waiting for their ‘forever families’.

At any one time there are around 20 children, including brothers and sisters, in Doncaster who cannot live with their birth parents and who are looking for a loving and stable family home.

The Trust’s Adoption Service will hold an online information drop-in event on Wednesday 14 October from 9am to 7pm. Places can be booked by calling the team on 01302 737 740 or email adoption@dcstrust.co.uk At this event you will have the opportunity to talk to the team as well as experienced adopters.

Manager of the adoption team, Claire Holmes said: “Our aim this National Adoption Week is to dispel some myths that surround adoption. Just as our children come from different backgrounds, so do our adopters.

“Adopting is truly a life-changing decision; something that can bring great joy and richness to your life. If you are thinking about opening your home and heart to a child then our event is a great way to find out more about the process and the support our team can offer.”

Brendan and Elliott are adoptive parents to three young brothers. They knew they wanted children years ago but, says Brendan, they thought that same sex couples couldn’t adopt.

“When we realised we could the process was a happy accident,” said Brendan. “We saw an advert for the Trust’s Adoption Service with an email to contact to express an interest. We emailed and got a phone call really quickly.

“We had a home visit after which we went on a four-day training course and then were well supported by the Trust service throughout the adoption process.”

They add: “Our lives are complete now. It’s like the boys have always been part of our family.”

The couple’s advice to anyone considering adoption is to speak to the Trust team and find out more.

Those who cannot make the event are invited to give the team a call on 01302 737 740. Details about the Adoption Service can also be found at: www.adoptingindoncaster.org

“Having an Independent Visitor volunteer was the best thing that ever happened to me, and nine years later we’re still going strong. I'd be lost without you guys.”
