Becci Coole with Chair of Board, Colin Hilton

High flying care leaver becomes business guru

A budding young entrepreneur has seen her business idea, aimed at helping people to understand the life of a young person in care, take off.

And, thanks to its popularity, it is set to raise funds which the Doncaster Children’s Services Trust is to use to help other young care leavers turn their career dreams into a reality.

Becci Coole (19) is a bright and active Modern Young Apprentice at the Trust, whose ambition is to eventually become a social worker- and she is currently pursuing an Access to HE Social Work and Criminal Justice course, which the Trust has helped to fund.

Having lived in care for several years herself, Becci has been working with other young people to deliver an insightful course into life in care, from a child’s perspective, Hear Me. They have delivered sessions to 350 staff and foster carers; and to some outside the Trust including NHS workers.

“We created the activities for the course to help adults understand just what it is like to be a child or teen living in care,” she says.

seen what an impact the training has had on delegates from Trust. But from speaking to others outside of the Trust, I realised there were others who be interested in the course.

Becci put forward her business case to the Trust Board, who agreed the expansion and that the income generated will form the ‘Becci Bursary’ for those who, like Becci, wish to pursue a career in social work and it will fund them to complete their Access to HE Social Work and Criminal Justice course.

Becci added; “We’ve been overwhelmed by initial interest from companies. I was very touched when Colin, the Trust Board Chair, suggested naming the bursary after me. I feel very lucky to have the support from the Trust to pursue my studies and I hope the Becci’s Bursary will support others too.”

Trust Board Chair, Colin Hilton, said: “When the Trust first set up, we wanted young people to be at the heart of the business and to shape how it developed. Becci is one of our inspiring Chief Executive’s Young Advisors, she has lots of great ideas and experience we can all learn from. She will make a great social worker and no-one doubts she will fulfil her dream of becoming one.”
