The Trust Fostering Conference was a lively and informative event.

Inspirational care leavers share their experiences with Doncaster foster carers

Last week saw care leaver turned comedian, Sophie Willan, and ground-breaking Foster Focus Director, Luke Rodgers, head to Doncaster to celebrate the contribution of foster carers with Doncaster Children’s Services Trust.

The Trust hosted its foster carers conference on Tuesday 20 June with almost 150 foster carers from across the area joining together to share their experiences, network and celebrate the contribution they make to the lives of children and young people across the borough.

Paul Moffatt, Chief Executive at the Trust said: “The conference is just one way we support and celebrate our foster carers; it provides a chance for carers across Doncaster to meet, share their experiences and hear from young people who have been in care themselves.”

“This year is particularly special as we’ve invited two rousing guests in Sophie and Luke. Sophie has turned her experiences in care into tongue-in-cheek comedy and Luke into entrepreneurialism through his organisation ‘Foster Focus’ which helps young people have their voices heard.”

Sophie and Luke were just just two of the motivational speakers, with the Fostering Network also speaking about the pioneering Mockingbird Family Model which has been running in Doncaster since 2015. The conference was also chaired by young people and gave a powerful insight into the importance of family.

“I wanted to acknowledge the significant improvements made in the past year. The turnaround has been remarkable.”
