Let’s hear it for our volunteers

This week marks the beginning of another important celebration in our calendars – Volunteers Week 2020.

The annual celebration which runs from the 1 – 7 June is an opportunity to show our gratitude towards the dedicate volunteers who give their free time to help make a difference to the children and young people the Trust supports.

This year the Trust will holding a virtual celebration across social media platforms, as they hear from their wonderful Trusted Mentor volunteers who have been sharing the ways in which they have been reinforcing a sense of reality for the young people through the lockdown period.

Never failing to amaze, through uncertain times many volunteers with the Trust are still doing the upmost to support the children and young people they mentor.

One prime example of this comes from a Trusted Mentor volunteer, who has been making sure to have weekly FaceTime calls to catch up on what her mentee has been doing on a week to week basis. Their calls usually last between 10 to 20 minutes and the mentor has been keen to try and set her youngster small targets of reading and drawing during these calls to keep up an interest in schoolwork.

Trying to keep things as normal as possible for her mentee after one call, she surprised her by dropping off a box of goodies on the door step, much to her mentees delight. Speaking on these acts of kindness she said: "We have a conversation once a week. I think it is important for her to have someone to talk to."

Commenting further on these unpredicdented times, another dedicated Trusted Mentor volunteer added:

"During this time mentoring and support is as crucial as ever. Times are very difficult and I feel everyone should feel like they have a good support system and a friend to talk to. The least we can do is to continue to provide our mentoring and support."

This week the Trust will also be sharing messages from our Team Doncaster partners - such as Doncaster Council, Doncaster CCG, and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospital - to show our thanks towards the volunteers who have gone above and beyond over this Covid-19 period.

So if you don’t already, follow the Doncaster Children's Services Trust on social media to help celebrate the dedication of volunteers across Doncaster.
