New chair of the Trust board appointed

We are delighted to announce that Tony Hunter has been appointed as the Chair of the Trust Board.

The appointment comes as current Chair, Colin Hilton, retires at the end of this month.

Tony is a familiar face to many and has played a vital part in the success of the Trust, having been a non-executive director since 2014.

Tony has a wealth of experience and knowledge in children’s services having started his career as a social worker in Doncaster. He is the Chief Executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) and will continue in that job alongside the role announced today. Tony has been at SCIE since January 2014, and is also a former president of the Association of Directors of Social Services.

Educated at Doncaster Grammar School, Oxford University and (for his social work qualification) Nottingham University, Tony has council experience as a frontline social worker, senior hospital social worker, training manager and manager of day and domiciliary services, as well as four years as Barnardo’s Principal Policy and Development Officer.

In the early 90s, Tony worked for Price Waterhouse Coopers on a range of health and social care projects before joining East Riding of Yorkshire Council as its Director of Social Services, Housing and Public Protection. As Liverpool City Council’s director from 2003, Tony led the social care improvement agenda, before becoming Chief Executive of North East Lincolnshire Council in 2008.

Tony was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List in 2010, for services to social care.

There was a lot of interest from across the sector and from those outside of children’s services for the Chairman's role. The interview process took the views of partners, staff, board members, and of course the invaluable opinions of our young people.

Outgoing chair, Colin, who has been instrumental in establishing the Trust in 2014, said: “It has been my absolute privilege to be a part of the Trust since its inception and to see it develop and thrive.

“It is a testament to the dedication and commitment of the directors, senior leadership team and the staff, that the Trust has achieved all it has together with the support of partners. I wish it every continuing success in the future.”

Tony said: “I would like to thank Colin for all the clear and strong Board leadership he has given the Trust during its challenging first years. As a proud Doncaster lad, who started his social work career here, I am honoured to be asked to be Chair of the Trust Board, and look forward to building on success to date and working alongside Team Doncaster partners in making our town a great place for children to grow up in and reach their full potential.”

Speaking about the appointment, Chief Executive of the Trust, Paul Moffat said: “We are extremely pleased that with his extensive experience in the public sector and as a proactive member of the Trust board that Tony has agreed to become the next Chair. It is a great appointment which the partnership, Trust staff, and the young people were unanimously behind.

“We are immensely grateful for all of Colin’s invaluable support and expertise in shaping the Trust’s work and helping it go from strength to strength. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Tony will commence the role on 1 April.

“You painted a picture of the situation for the young person and were clearly passionate about promoting his voice.”
