Trust searching for specialist foster carers

Trust Fostering, the fostering service run by Doncaster Children’s Services Trust, is searching for a number of paid, specialist foster carers to join the innovative Mockingbird programme which has been running in the borough since 2015.

Bringing together a number of foster families, Mockingbird provides unparalleled support to foster carers in Doncaster, creating an extended network of family-like support, made up of foster families who face the same ups and downs as one another.

The Trust are searching for a number of specialist foster carers; to work specifically to protect vulnerable young people who are at risk of Child Sexual Exploitation, self-harm or on the edge of the Youth Offending System and to work as Mockingbird Hub Carers who offer support to foster families.

Vickie Oldroyd, Mockingbird Project Manager said: “We have a number of specialist carer roles which we are looking to recruit to. We need people who can act as an advocate for young people and a shoulder to lean on for foster carers.”

“The right candidates for these roles will be robust, have a good sense of humour and be able to provide a safe and understanding space for children, young people and foster carers, often at short notice, and for varying lengths of time.”

At times challenging, the paid positions are an integral part of offering the best support possible to Looked After Children in Doncaster and their foster families. The specialist carers work to create a sense of community by creating friendships, planning social activities and offering 24/7 support and guidance.

Vickie added: “It isn’t an easy job, but the successful person will be fully supported by our incredible Mockingbird network made up of experience and enthusiastic carers from across the borough, plus a dedicated team at the Trust who are there for carers 24/7.”

Those interested in taking up one of the roles are invited to attend one of the Trust’s upcoming drop-in recruitment events to be held on Wednesday 6 December 2017 at Holiday Inn, High Rd, Warmsworth, Doncaster DN4 9UX between 10:30am – 12:30pm or 1:30- 3:30pm.

Tea, coffee and refreshments will be provided with current specialist Mockingbird foster carers on hand to talk about their roles, their day to day work and being part of the Trust Fostering team. Members of the team will also be there to discuss the application process and next steps for applying.

People from all backgrounds can make great carers and are invited to express an interest. You can apply regardless of your marital status, sexuality, race or religion. Many of the children have been through difficult times, so carers need to be great listeners and have plenty of patience.

If you are unable to attend the drop-in recruitment event but would like to find out more about the roles please visit www.trustfostering.co.uk/recruitment in the first instance, or contact Vickie Oldroyd on Vickie.oldroyd@dcstrust.co.uk

“I was impressed with how well she shared information and discussed the complex concerns. She has supported the young person well to have a voice which was definitely heard today.”
